DUNNOTTAR CASTLE POINT CLOUD SURVEY

Project Insight

Innovair are often tasked in completing surveys for heritage sites however Dunnottar has to be one of our favourites. Combining aerial survey data along with with ground based laser scanning, a fully colourised point cloud was created to produce elevation drawings for the castle site and surrounding grounds.

Client: Dunecht Estates

Location: Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire

Deliverable: Point Cloud Survey

Duration: 14 Days

Challenges

  • Busy period for visitors

  • Drone survey carried out early morning

  • Complexity of Terrain

  • Over 1 TB of data collected

  • Coastal weather conditions

Solution

Due to the complexity of the terrain on which the castle is located, a combination of aerial drone surveys with ground-based laser scanning was utilised to obtain accurate point cloud data. Over 1Tb of data was collected over the course of two weeks in which was a very busy period for tourists and visitors at the castle grounds. Our technology provides a non-evasive technique for preserving heritage sites by providing a reconstructed digital twin.
