Internal Blade Inspection Campaign
Scope Overview
A major wind operator required a reliable solution to assess internal blade condition across all of their turbines at a large wind farm in Scotland. Innovair delivered a full inspection campaign in a single mobilisation using BladeRunner™, providing detailed visibility inside each blade and supporting proactive maintenance planning.
The goal: enable early defect detection and minimise turbine downtime through planned maintenance.
The Challenge
Internal blade defects such as cracking, adhesive failure, delamination, foreign object debris and water ingress are often hidden and cannot be confirmed through external inspection alone. Traditional internal methods are slow, intrusive and limited by poor access and visibility.
The Solution
Innovair deployed its BladeRunner™ internal crawler system to complete precise inspections from root to tip, without the need for confined space entry or rope access. Key features included:
Ultra high resolution imaging with adaptive lighting
Full internal coverage to identify structural defects early
Consistent, repeatable capture for comparison over time
Data delivered via the Discovair portal for clear review and collaboration
All data was delivered through Discovair™, Innovair’s cloud-based inspection intelligence platform. This allowed SSE to track defect trends over multiple years and prioritise repairs with confidence.
The Results
High confidence defect detection and categorisation
Reduced turbine downtime and efficient delivery
Clear repair priorities to support maintenance planning
Multi year data continuity for asset life extension
