Internal Caisson Inspection North Sea

Scope Brief

An offshore operator required a reliable way to inspect internal caisson condition across its UKCS assets. Traditional inspection methods such as drop cameras and spot-check UT readings only provided partial coverage, leaving blind spots in the most vulnerable areas. This created asset risk, unplanned interventions, and integrity decisions based on assumption rather than evidence.

The goal: proactive integrity management and reduced unplanned interventions.

The Challenge

Offshore caissons are exposed to harsh environments and complex failure modes, with degradation most likely in:

  • Splash zones

  • Behind guide supports

  • Circumferential welds

Existing inspection methods were not delivering the insight required to make confident integrity decisions.

The Solution

Innovair™ deployed OSIRIS™, our in-house engineered robotic inspection platform, designed specifically to inspect the full length of offshore caissons internally. This approach delivered:

  • 100% internal coverage across dry, splash and submerged zones

  • High-resolution visual inspection paired with ultrasonic wall thickness mapping

  • Self-sufficient deployment with no operational disruption

  • Data delivered via Discovair™, our interactive cloud-based inspection intelligence platform

The Results

  • First complete internal dataset of caisson condition ever received by the operator

  • Identification of pitting, abrasive wear, and full circumferential severance caused by fatigue

  • Rapid delivery: full inspection (visual, cleaning, UT) in under 10 days

  • Defensible inspection record for regulators and internal audit
